Interview: LØLØ

Canadian pop/rock starlet LØLØ is tearing up the music scene with her edgy, in-your-face odes to heartbreak, resentment, and reminiscing the brutal graveyard of pet goldfish we’ve all loved and lost. This rising singer/songwriter is bringing a fresh taste of earworm pop melodies to the alt-rock landscape with songs like “u look stupid”, “death wish”, and her latest 6-track EP “overkill”. This week, I got to chat with LØLØ about our shared affinity for Green Day, building a music career during TikTok’s ultimate rise to popularity, and all the exciting plans LØLØ has for this upcoming year!

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, LØLØ grew up on the likes of pop/rock legends that still influence her own musical sound today. With the gritty instrumentals of Green Day and the headstrong lyricality of Avril Lavigne, LØLØ notes that Hillary Duff, Weezer, and countless others opened her eyes to the world of hard-hitting music from an early age.

Despite her deep pop/rock roots, LØLØ’s earliest releases were in the sweeter pop realm of music. While her debut single “Yours” landed LØLØ on the New Music Friday Canada and was über popular on Canadian radio, the artist says her recent, darker music feels much more authentic and true to her personality.

I took a whole year to keep writing and molding that sound I was chasing. I liked the punkier, heavier stuff and definitely wanted to explore that in my own music. Once COVID hit, I was releasing music that was truly me. I love quirky lyrics and darker themes. It’s fun to keep digging into that for inspiration.

After releasing her stunning cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” in June 2019, LØLØ spent the following months digging deeper into her alt-pop/rock roots. Her impressive quarantine releases “Dead Inside”, “Hate U”, and “Dear First Love,” showed us a new, edgier side to LØLØ. This artist’s creative avenues didn’t end there. LØLØ dove into TikTok not long after COVID-19 quarantine began. Her most viral videos include POV covers of songs like Taylor Swift’s “Betty”, The Kid Laroi’s “Without You”, “Someone Like You” by Adele, and more. Viewers couldn’t get enough of LØLØ’s awe-inspiring ability to incorporate devastating heartache with serene maturity and grace. Months down the road, her early 2021 anti-social anthem “lonely & pathetic” catapulted the artist from the world of pop into the darker, alt-rock sound that LØLØ fans know and love. For fans of renforshort, Charlotte Sands, and UPSAHL, LØLØ’s unshakeable sound is the ultimate blend of glittering pop melodies, sharp rock undertones, and angsty vocals that coax our bitter heartbreak to the surface of any song.

Besides her impressive songwriting abilities and ear for a good tune, LØLØ is a natural-born performer who demands the attention of any crowd. Her recent tour leg with New Found Glory and Simple Plan proved this stunning starlet is truly the whole package.

The artist’s new 6-track EP “overkill” has quickly become my favorite LØLØ record yet. Kicking off with the ridiculously relatable “death wish”, LØLØ dives into her inability to keep plants and goldfish alive. This concept seamlessly intertwines with her history of relationships as the song stumbles down a path of unfortunate realities and wickedly hilarious comparisons.

The EP continues with punky, tongue-in-cheek tracks like “lonely & pathetic”, “hurt less”, “u look stupid” and “die without u” that deserve to be screamed at the top of your lungs. LØLØ challenges the songwriting formality of smiling and nodding to lyrical content that merely skims the surface of true emotional distress. Instead, this pop/rock artist leans into rough-around-the-edges emotions with sharp, teeth-gritting authenticity. This kind of music feels just as good as it sounds, and we can’t get enough of LØLØ.

Wrapping up the “overkill” EP, “surgery” absolutely shines on this action-packed record. With shimmering vocals and an acoustic guitar, LØLØ ends “overkill” with a haunting ode to vulnerability and self-loathing. Lyrics like “I asked the doctor to cut out the parts of my brain that know your name that feel the pain” reveal the messy loss of a lover that constantly chews you up and spits you out. As the final song on LØLØ’s EP, “surgery” has become a hair-raising staple to her glowing discography of honest, heartfelt songs.

This week, LØLØ released her latest single “christmas vacation” a soothing track that parallels the torturous memory of a ‘what-if’ past lover. LØLØ says the song’s concept came to her in a rush one night a few weeks ago, and after calling up her producer, she was determined to bring her work to life. Rest assured, “christmas vacation” will not fall into your typical “cheesy holiday tunes” category. LØLØ continues creating songs that are both deeply personal and simply timeless.

Rising pop punk stunner LØLØ is the kind of artist who just gets it. Her sound is a fresh, in-your-face glimpse into a diary of brutal heartbreak and relentless overthinking. The new year will bring lots more LØLØ to your ears, including new music, new videos, and hopefully shows across the country! LØLØ’s unique sound stands out in the music scene, making her an artist to definitely keep on your radar this upcoming year.

You can stream LØLØ’s new single “christmas vacation” on Spotify and Apple Music. Be sure to follow LØLØ on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube for all the latest updates on her music and tours.
