Angelina’s Corner: Roundup

Dive Bar Breakdown by The Thing With Feathers

This alt-rock track has some great folk-pop sensibilities swirled in, like the musical lovechild of the 1975 and Noah Kahan. With head-banging drumbeats and a message surrounding mental health and managing overwhelm (with or without romance being the reason), there’s so much to love about this track. After all, “it just takes some time to get it right” — although I for one, think this band hit it out of the park with this song. Take a listen, and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Monochrome by Carley Varley

There are always a few submissions that I get really excited about, and this was one of them. With all the best of Paramore and Evanescence, this artist has that quintessential early-2000s kickass vibe and glittery angst to fuel your inner emo teenager. Whether you’re still that teenager, or just have the leftover angst, this song is just what you need when healing from a breakup or just life in the modern age in general. Listen to the driving guitars and drums loud, and bonus points if your parents (or neighbors) yell for you to turn it down.

Taking You Down by LEYVA

These twin sisters are packed full of talent, and this song showcases that fact without a question. I loved their vocal harmonies, lead guitar solo, and especially that hook that has been stuck in my head just about since I heard it. There’s so much similarity to some of the greats like Heart or Fleetwood Mac, but they have this added updated feel that fits seamlessly on any alt-rock or even pop punk playlist. This is a 10/10, fantastic track and I seriously believe these girls are headed straight for the bigtime. Take a listen to this clever breakup track now so you can say you knew the new Aly & AJ before anyone else did.

White Flag by Devon Alexander

This is a beautiful track outlining what it’s like to give up a relationship that turned out to be toxic. Of course, this doesn’t come without the added emotional stress of letting go, but this song is about the awareness that the pain of the separation is for the best. The best comparison I thought of was Lewis Capaldi, especially with that subtle articulation of sadness that leaks through the vocals in a subtle cry. There’s so much heart in this track, and I know it will connect with so many listeners.

Greed by Circle the Earth

Rounding out this week’s selections is a delightful mix of Gwen Stefani-meets-Avril Lavigne for your listening pleasure. This track is angry, but also really powerful. Electric guitars and their fuzzed-out angst bring the power, alongside powerhouse vocals all about calling out corrupt government systems. I appreciate the message of using your voice to make a difference, and really like the rock style that this one brings front and center. It’s a great pump-up song for your next workout too. And that guitar solo — say no more. Totally shred-worthy and incredible.
