Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
This gorgeous tune features thoughtful, immersive lyrics that depict the heartbreaking reality of the passage of time. It was written about one of the band member's father, and it’s definitely got that haunting nostalgic quality to it. I love the way the instruments ebb and flow, marking the different years and phases of life that drop back to quiet simplicity during the verses. For an emotional song with angst similar to something Florence and the Machine might write, this song is just the thing to get you in your feels.
Pleasantville
This song is an adventure off the beaten path inspired by a Black Mirror episode, with an electrifying concept video to go with it. It’s a thought-provoking dark alt-pop gem with electrified guitar riffs and raspy vocals. The lyrics question how far you’re willing to run away from your social media habits — and the price you pay if you don’t. It’s gritty and a bit spooky — but not in the ways you might expect. In the digital age, I love the way music is starting to speak out about the pitfalls of technology, both as a warning and a call to action.
The Ones We Don’t Hear by Joe Lynott
I was instantly drawn into this folk-rock song that features crisp guitar riffs, Bon Jovi-worthy vocals mixed with some Matchbox Twenty flair, and enough sonic dynamics and variation to keep even the most jaded music fan engaged. Whether you’re looking for something thematic, edgy, or emotional, this song has it all. It’s written about coping with life and recognizing that there are so many stories and people that we don’t get to listen to. Listeners are inspired to be brave enough to call out “synthetic sympathy” and find out the reason.
Come By by Paul from Soul Stranger
This is an epic summer vibe, with bouncing guitar riffs, and some kind of island-related percussion that I can’t put my finger on. It’s all about taking things easy, enjoying life, and embracing the sunshine in your life no matter what happens. I loved the harmonizing dueling guitars in the bridge, and think that there’s something for everyone here. Bonus points for bringing Curious George to mind (still not totally sure why, but there’s an overwhelming sense of wholesome acceptance and good energy in this track). Enjoy with your favorite beverage on the beach for maximum effect.
I really enjoyed this fun alt-pop song that’s romantic, summery, and a little bit sultry. There’s a sort of twilight vibe to it, with light and darkness popping up as subtle themes throughout the track. There’s a techno component that’s not so different from the newer stuff All Time Low has produced in recent years. At the end of the day, it’s just an honest-to-goodness pop track with great vocal harmonies, unrequited love, and a great beat. If this sounds like your style, I can promise you’ll have it on repeat.
