Angelina’s Corner: Roundup

Words by: Angelina Singer

Me4Me by Passion Company

This song is perfect for Against the Current and Paramore fans of all ages — and reminded me so much of 2000s pop-punk albums. I loved the ambient guitar and the poetic lyrics that inspire listeners to evaluate their latest relationship for being even and balanced. I didn’t quite understand the relevance of the tarot cards on the cover art, but aside from that, the song is fantastic. At its core, it’s all about finding a person who loves you for who you really are, and not just some fabricated version. Bright vocal harmonies and a driving drumbeat make this anthem ready for a stadium show, so get in on their music before anyone else does.

Letting Go by exPorter

This song harkens back to the grit-laden tunes of the 90s, with an added edge that brings it into the present moment. It also reminded me a lot of music by Weezer or Greenday, with fuzzed-out electric guitars and distorted vocals. It’s nostalgic for the recent past and reminds you not to take your one special life for granted. I really like the way the verses build into the choruses, with great dynamics and poetic lyrics that will take the listener on a sonic journey. Listen to it loud to be instantly transported to your angsty teen years (minus the acne and homework).

Baby Don’t You Want Me by Wasted Major

Shifting gears into this jazzy pop song is a breath of fresh air as we head into the fall season. It’s warm, cozy, and a contemporary look into chill party music that you can listen to with friends or alone. I loved the vintage-feeling vocal harmonies that feel like something out of a Motown tune with an added 70s vibe worthy of Fleetwood Mac or the Doobie Brothers. Bonus points for that slick guitar solo that might bump this into the category of “dad” music — but who says that’s a bad thing? The message is self-explanatory in the title, but if there’s any confusion, play this song around your crush for best results.

Open Invitation by Jade Marie Patek

This song has an undeniable groove that will have you bopping your head or your money back. With some fluid blues structures and lead guitar that sizzles, this sultry track will bring your latest love interest to mind. It’s all about speaking your mind, and being honest with yourself and the person that you can’t get out of your head. The vocalist carries the tune effortlessly, with a catchy beat that’s full-bodied without being too overwhelming sonically. The guitar solo brings this song into the current era, while still blending in that jazz vibe that will impress even the most serious musicians. You can leave your reservations at the door when you rock out to this track — and maybe you’ll even find love along the way.

Feel it by Tin Angel

I could’ve sworn these ladies have the same talent as some of the greats like Fleetwood Mac or the Dixie Chicks. There’s an instant feeling of familiarity upon hearing this track, with ethereal complex vocal harmonies that create a gorgeous outdoor farmland ambience. The song is all about being brave enough to go after the person you love, with some added slightly-sultry lyrics that make this song equal parts poignant and poetic, with an added coming-of-age element. If you’ve ever fallen in love but were too afraid to make a move, this is your sign to go for it.
