Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
Restless Legs by Gavin Marengi
This classic country tune is a masterful example of how to tell a story in song form. “Don’t stop until you touch the sky” is one of my favorite lyrics in the song, reminding listeners that you’ve got to be brave enough to chase your dreams — no matter how crazy they seem. What also stood out to me is the way the production almost constantly changes dynamically without seeming too musically busy. One of my favorite moments is the dueling guitars towards the end of the song. For such a young artist, this song showcases so much talent and artistry that is going to take him a long way in the industry. Listen to this song when you need a little extra motivation for a big lesson or a long journey to wherever you’re going.

Must be Dreamin’ by Christian Walker
Continuing with the pop country vibes this week, this song really locks into the country genre but has such a catchy hook. It stands out from the countless other country songs sung about love because the vocals and poeticism are so clearly put together. I also liked the subtle guitar articulations and slick debut album Taylor Swift reference which may or may not have been intentional (“Oh My My My” - true Swifties know what I’m talking about). This song is written all about what it’s like to fall in love when everything feels fresh, exciting and new — and life is better than your wildest dreams.
This alt-rock song has some punk roots that really bring the listener into that space of not being able to turn their brain off - especially when it comes to love. I really appreciated the way the sonic dynamics of the song reflect the ups and downs of emotions without seeming too disjointed. If you’re a fan of punk music filled with grit and palm muted guitars with a lot of heart, this song is just the thing. It also reminded me a lot of music by Paramore or maybe Flyleaf — two bands that have solidly put themselves in this similar genre. Great guitar solo too — listen loud for the full effect.
Chilling out this week’s roundup is this more relaxed but still moody and broody tune that sounds like something out of Birdy’s playbook. It’s soulful, intense, and filled with gorgeous vocals that bounce off the repeating piano line that makes the message feel very stream-of-consciousness in its delivery. As the song progresses, there are some more rock elements that work their way in, while the songstress continues to sing of love, loss, and the unfortunate clarity that comes from knowing better for next time. While it’s a great song to cry to, it’s also a beautiful reminder that sometimes growth hurts but it’s so worthwhile.
When Love is at the Root by Geoff Abraham Band
This song is such a testament to the contemporization of the classic rock style — with a style that reminded me a lot of traditional country rock music, there’s still enough new material here to keep everyone happy. I was impressed by the tight lead guitar riffs that keep everything moving smoothly without being chaotic. The message is all about keeping love at the center of everything you do, because that’s what everyone needs to thrive. Wherever you find yourself in your love journey, this song will encourage you to love loudly and without abandon — no matter what happens next.
