Concert Recap: Zara Larsson

Review by Fearghal McGlinchey

I remember watching highlights of Zara Larsson's set at Radio 1’s Big Weekend festival in the summer and at the time I thought I hope she tours the UK soon - so I was very excited to experience her live show at the iconic Roundhouse in London, let alone be able to shoot it.

The stage design was a standout feature, boasting two levels with the band positioned below the main platform. As the lights lowered, Zara made her entrance, emerging from between sliding doors atop the stage, setting the tone by opening with her album title track, 'Venus'.

Throughout the show, I was equally impressed with both Zara's vocals and her dance choreography, but being able to combine the two effortlessly was the most impressive aspect for me - being able to not show any signs of loss of breath between each note is a skill in itself.

The concert was divided into two parts, with a wardrobe change marking the midway point. Part one included hits such as 'I Would Like', 'Girls Like' and 'Ruin My Life', while part two featured 'Symphony', 'WOW' and 'Ammunition', Zara's personal favourite from her latest album.

As the night drew to a close, the audience were treated to 'Lush Life' and 'Can't Tame Her', capping off an excellent gig. I personally think Zara Larsson is quite underrated, going back to the combined vocals and choreography, there are not many artists that can do that - especially to that standard too. I love seeing artists in the 'smaller' venues, and maybe that was the tours intention, by making the shows more intimate - but Zara definitely has the performance level and hits to be playing at the 'bigger' venues, 100%.
