Weekly Roundup

Overrated — M. Aubrey

Kicking off this week’s roundup is the hazy new pop-rock single from M. Aubrey. The song is laid-back and unbothered but plays with some classic rock riffs to spice it up. His lyrics describe getting over a brief relationship, wondering whether it really was ‘overrated’.  The bridge is an experimental Tom Morello-style guitar solo that really makes the track unique.

Wallflower – Headrush
The solo project of 17-year-old Jack Warren, Headrush’s new track muses on social anxiety. As someone who also struggles with this, I related a lot to the introspective lyrics – ‘a shiver runs deep right through my bones / there’s so much more I could have shown’. Relaxed clean-tone guitars and some simple percussion make this indie track catchy and easy to listen to.

Where are you now? – Aaron Spencer

Perfect for fans of Arctic Monkeys and Blossoms, Liverpool-based Aaron Spencer brings his own spin on indie rock. This new release blends 2000s alternative with 80s new wave to create a nostalgic yet modern sound. Where are you now? looks back on a sudden breakup and focuses on the good times before it turned sour.

GOLIATH – ameliarose

GOLIATH is a pop song with an edge – dark and moody piano crashes underneath unique, experimental vocals. The stripped back verses are a sharp contrast with the heavier and more chaotic choruses. ameliarose is a poet as well as a musician, and you can really hear the different strands of her creativity coming together in this eclectic track.

Levitating – Nina Chuba

Levitating is Nina Chuba’s third single of 2021, released ahead of her new EP Average (June 4th). Her style of electro-pop, reminiscent of Halsey and Ariana Grande, combines dreamy piano chords with synths and digital percussion. Nina says that the song is about finding yourself in a ‘relationship that is meant to crash’ and realising that you need to get out of it.

Maryland – rella

Bedroom pop with a folk twist sums up rella’s new song. The self-described ‘breakup connoisseur returns with a new pop anthem that screams summer. Maryland is the soundtrack of a party girl now trying to go sober, addressed to an old friend (or lover?) from back in the day. They are a true powerhouse vocalist and this track really allows that to shine.

Pieces of Summer – Amor Amor

You can practically feel the rays of sunlight coming off Amor Amor’s debut single. Clocking in at just under 3 minutes, it’d be perfect for heavy rotation on any pop radio station. The funky bassline and melodic electric guitar make it stand out from many other ‘sound of the summer’ tracks.
