Angelina’s Corner: Roundup

Lauren Mian

This pop-rock gem has so much to offer anyone dealing with insecurities or social anxiety. I absolutely loved the pre-chorus buildup into the even bigger choruses with a deeper meaning despite the bright and energetic sound. The theme of this song is the idea that even on a universally-enjoyable time of the week like a Friday, this person is dealing with more nuanced emotions and needs support. It’s also a great reminder to check on your friends and loved ones, because they might need your support more than you might think. With all the sensibilities of your favorite 2000s-era coming-of-age movie anthem, you’ll want to listen to it loud and often.

Calling by Lauren Mian

This effervescent, ethereal track will transport you into the nearest flower garden no matter what time of year it is (butterflies not included). Beautifully-articulated guitar arpeggiation will greet your ears, and then you’ll hear the meaning of the lyrics. It’s talking about the difficult situation of feeling stuck in life (whether that’s in a bad relationship or a job that you hate), but there’s also so much hope embedded in it too. At the very least, you’ll know you’re not alone in feeling that way and that someday, there will be an end in sight. Not only is this song musically interesting, but the vocal harmonies are also so smooth and satisfying to listen to.

Lose My Head by Lips Speak Louder

This edgy classic-rock style is just the thing to headbang to, chock-full of satisfyingly-fuzzed out lead guitar riffs and rhythmic angst. For the one who feels like they’re about to lose their mind over a series of major (or minor) inconveniences, this is the song that you’ll relate to. I loved the guitar solo and all the sonic dynamics that keep every part of this song feeling fresh (especially the “dueling” guitars moment in the solo). Blare this track to let off some steam after a rough Monday (or any day that feels like a Monday).

Hide and Seek by Brandon Henson

Richie Paisley

This bright tune illustrates the cat-and-mouse feeling of being unfulfilled in any relationship, and the need to advocate for yourself more often. It’s got that quintessential 90s pop rock feel à la Goo Goo Dolls that would lend itself well to the self-improvement montage in any movie. I liked the different textures of the keyboard compared with the bright guitars and the smooth vocals. For an instant mood-boost, listen to this one to feel better about prioritizing your needs even when it feels a bit uncomfortable.

Fire Brigade by Richie Paisley

This song is a very clever metaphor comparing a failing relationship to a fire that has to be put out. It’s got a strong John Mayer feel with an added layer of bittersweet emotion more akin to Ed Sheeran’s music. I really liked all the different sonic textures that keep this song interesting, and the way this metaphor isn’t a one-and-done situation - it pops up throughout the lyrics in a way that’s all-encompassing from the writing perspective. If you find yourself nursing a broken heart, this song will help you start to heal and remember that even the worst fires can’t burn forever.
