Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
Dan Cully
If Jason Mraz was an indie-folk artist, this song would be one of his hits. This tune is wholesome, bright, and full of positivity written all about embracing the new things in life, even if you’re scared. A syncopated acoustic guitar leads while light echoing vocals light the way through this sonic journey. I really liked the subtle string section that blooms at the bridge of the song, and the way the whole thing ebbs and flows like a river. It’s so soothing and fresh, you’ll want to listen to it over and over again.
Silhouettes and State Lines by neurocrush
This piano-driven track cuts like a knife, but it’s bright and soothing at the same time as it builds up momentum in its theatricality. “You called me beautiful enough that I forgot my name” is a beautifully poetic line — but it’s only one of many in this song. There’s so much to unpack here, especially with the deep meaning and emotional content of dealing with a heartbreak that still feels freshly broken. No matter how this song finds you, you’ll see yourself here in ways that you might not expect.
Won’t You Come With Me by Geordie Brown
You’ll love this multilayered 70s-inspired track that starts out sweet and then gets downright rowdy in the best way. With moments cognizant of Queen and Fleetwood Mac, there’s something in here for everyone. I really liked the vocal harmonies and the bright, easygoing lyrics that are simple enough to be stuck in your head without being overly bland. That shred-worthy guitar solo speaks for itself, while the cowbell is a unique addition that you don’t hear in songs very often. Listen to this tune anytime you need a new roadtrip track to pass the time.
Break out your skinny jeans and board shorts for this track — it’s got that quintessential 2000s-emo vibe that brings about all the memories from those days. From the romanticization of summer, with the angst and driving electric guitar that you know and love, this song has everything you loved about your younger years. I also think the vocalist sounds a lot like Patty Walters of the band As It Is, which is pretty cool in my book. Listen to this one loud for maximum joy and to leave your stress miles behind you.
Rise from Ruin by Boxeybob Music
This song is a bright light through the darkness — a great reminder that life goes on after struggles no matter how bad things get. It’s got some cinematic elements to it that really drive home power ballad energy that would fit in any movie montage without being cheesy. I also like the vocal tone and sonic dynamics of the changing guitar rhythms throughout. “Somewhere deep the fire won’t die / it flickers low but it reaches the sky” are only some of the powerful lyrics that will fuel your next big comeback. Listen to it anytime you need a reminder to get up and try again.
