“I guess I just couldn’t get enough” of Comfort Club’s new single “Two Kids In A Trench Coat” because it’s on repeat in my rotation! This dream pop bang banger will have you feeling your heartbeat as the indie pop artist takes you through a bittersweet story of young love and heartbreak in a subdued yet comfortable vibey space. Between the sonics and the phonics, “Two Kids In A Trench Coat” grabs your ear with a nostalgic whisper and sends you into a gentle whirlpool of emotions as you ride the dream pop waves down the lazy river.

Comfort Club combines his smooth guitar and silky voice with melodic elements of modern pop and a hint of lo-fi, emanating similar sounding songs to those by Dayglow, The 1975, and Cautious Clay. The song composition makes for an incredibly catchy but flowy tune, thanks to the rhyming lyrics and skilled storytelling intertwined into each verse. It is so subtly tweaked each time the next verse comes around, that it evokes the same feeling but choice verbiage keeps the story gracefully evolving.

The song’s tale is just as the title sounds. Comfort Club alludes to the pop culture cliche you might have seen in movies and TV shows of two kids stacked on top of each other under a trenchcoat to fool others into believing they’re collectively one adult, gaining them access to adult-only material. This is a clever title for the single because the premise is applied to a story about two young adults falling in love and using the love as a crutch to feel more stable in settling into the adult world.

However, as this story goes, you don’t get to choose who you love and perhaps this premise doesn’t always make for a solid foundation for a relationship. Comfort Club sings sincerely about how this breaks his heart, and how no matter what happened in the relationship he is still there for it and he hopes that they come back one day after they live a little adult life on their own. This gut wrenching hope is honestly pretty relatable for people going through heartbreaks, and “Two Kids In A Trench Coat'' is a great outlet of a song for people feeling the same emotions, or who just want a catchy, dream tune to sway to and appreciate where they’re at in their own love story. Especially in today’s day and age, adulting can seem so daunting when you’re young and staring it right in the face. Having someone you love by your side as you take on the large charges of growing up can feel so much more grounding and comfortable. I love the way Comfort Club utilizes the line “so we build Ikea furniture to make this house a home,” in the chorus because not only does it reiterate this principle of doing these things together makes life a lot more navigable, but once again, the choice verbiage makes the story so much more relatable.
