Single Review: Looking For This by Lorne Vincent

Launching into his latest track “Looking For This” with a quick beat of a snare, Lorne Vincent has taken his lyricism and style to an entire new level. Putting an upbeat indie-pop spin on a bittersweet ballad, Vincent takes a new approach to lyrical and sonic expression. Following up his 2021 JMQ Remix of hit single “Sweet Love Departed,” this is Vincent’s second track to hit the eyes and ears of listeners this year.

Although uniquely himself in every aspect of the world, the track was originally written for another artist. Prior to meeting up with his producer Benjamin McCarthy, Vincent sent over what he thought was the best of his demos he’d written but to his surprise, McCarthy was more interested in another track after seeing the abundance of work Vincent had cultivated over the previous few months.

I had approached Ben with a demo that I thought was my strongest and he was on board, but in our pre-production Skype meeting he basically said ‘hey, send me everything you’ve demoed in case there’s something we’ve left out’. That week I had just written a piano/vocal track to pitch to another artist, which was totally outside of my usual genre. Ben told me I would be mad not to release it myself.

Furthering their collaboration on the track, production veteran Benjamin McCarthy’s signature bass line carries the instrumentals of the song in tandem to blurred and drawn out synths. Complete with an optimistic and rising chord progression, the track is comparable to the likes of Dayglow, Mac Demarco, and Father John Misty.

Lyrically, the track is as true to Lorne Vincent as one can get. Described as some of his most mature work to date, the track is a cultivation of various phrases and thoughts the singer-songwriter had jotted down. Turning these thoughts and ideas into a lyrical process, Vincent shares that it was quite easy as it was originally written for another artist.

On the songwriting process, Vincent states, “I used a few notes in my iPhone to start off the lyrics based on a few quirky thoughts I had taken down – from meeting a partner who would explain all the things I missed in movies when I watched them, to deeper ideas like the relationship between our perceptions and the truth.” He adds that, “It was amazing how freeing it was writing with the mindset that the song was for someone else. I found the words flowed out quicker, I didn’t really apply much of a filter to it.”

After entering the music scene back in 2018 with single “Sorry For Wasting Your Time,” to embarking on a tour, Vincent’s aspirations have not slowed a bit. With following releases “Couldn’t Stay,” and “Sweet Love Departed” premiering in 2020, the singer-songwriter is quickly finding and developing his signature sound and style, and we cannot wait for more to come from him!
