Single Review: I’m Not Okay by Bluhm

Review by Isabelle Turner

Married couple John Marion and Claire Bluhm are emerging as a new iconic duo within the music industry. With their most recent release, “I’m Not Okay”, they continue to prove their place as revolutionists within the dreampop circuit.

After meeting at an open mic and connecting over their mutual love of music and performing, the couple eventually got married and have now decided to take the music industry by storm. Inspired by the likes of Beach House, The Beatles, and modern icons of the dreampop scene, Bluhm’s discography is truly one of a kind.

While only having been actively releasing music for about a year now, Bluhm has evolved drastically, especially when it comes to refining their sound. From their debut single “Everything” to popular release “Honey I’m Afraid”, Bluhm continues to develop their sound while testing the borders of the genre they’re in. Their recent single, “I’m Not Okay” continues the excitement of their forthcoming debut EP, Garden of Hearts.

“I’m Not Okay” details the struggles of anxiety within relationships. Navigating the fine line between love and hate, admist an internal crisis and the backlash that comes from it. Taking inspiration from deeply personal issues, “I’m Not Okay” is the physical product of the fears and emotions that come with being in a relationship.

Per true Bluhm fashion, the duo makes music that’s riddled with true honesty and realism, especially while focusing in on tackling difficult topics and themes. Claire’s voice is truly what gives the band their unique and special sound as her sweet vocal performance creates the perfect foundation for their lyrics and the defining point of the track. Laid against a lush soundscape, the vocals of the track carry the dreamy guitar strands to create an immersive experience. The simple strums have a retro feel, while also weaving in stunning keyboard elements and drum performance. The production of the track is absolutely stunning, having immense clarity in each instrument’s individual parts despite the thick overall sound.

Bluhm’s sound is only improving as they create and release more songs and “I’m Not Okay” is true proof of that. Through their work together in anticipation for their upcoming EP, Garden of Hearts, the duo has made a massive impact so far in dream pop and will continue to do so.

Be sure to listen to “I’m Not Okay" here if you haven't already and follow the band Bluhm for more jaw-dropping music.
