Single Review: Bones by HOL

We’ve featured this lovely singer-songwriter from the UK before, but with another jaw-dropping single released today, how could we pass up the opportunity to showcase her immense talent once again? At only eighteen years old, UK-based singer-songwriter and producer HOL (Hollie Findlay) continues to give it her all and leave everything on the table.

HOL

HOL

Born in Athens, Greece, and currently residing in the UK, HOL has spent the entirety of her childhood singing. A constant in her life, she began performing by the young age of fourteen and released her debut EP a few years following.

After just recently releasing her debut ten-track studio album “The Chapters,” HOL returns with her latest single “bones.” True to herself and her unique eccentric style, HOL’s releases are glazed with an aura of mystery, emotions, and vibrant colors.

“The Chapters,” released over the course of 2020 in ‘chapters’ is a collection of tracks that capture her knack for storytelling. Featuring chapters “lost,” “oblivion,” “solitude,” “epiphany,” and “petrichor,” the album is unlike any heard before. A developed maturity is clearly evident in her lyrics, instrumentals, and songwriting. With a growing following on Spotify, some of her notably popular tracks include “The Girl I Used To Be,” “21st Century Teen,” and “Seasons,” all of which originate on her debut album.

With “bones,” HOL dives deeper into themes of heartbreak, guilt, and eventual realization. The track opens as upbeat and vibrant as ever but contains a series of underlying thoughts, fears, and sorrow. With lyrics like, “The devil in disguise is in my bones / and I’ll talk to you until my eyes go sore,” HOL utilizes her signature metaphorical style paired with her eclectic and harmonious vocals. Serving as the emotional yet vivacious indie-pop anthem you need in your life, the new track is a must listen and is sure to be stuck in your head for days.
