Single Review: Broken Record by Alexa Givens

With a Grammy nomination already under her belt for her contributions to “All One Tribe”, singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Alexa Givens has set her sights on a solo career and officially released her debut single “Broken Record”. 

Reminiscent of Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey, Givens offers a wide vocal range and beautiful harmonies on “Broken Record”. The track is bedroom pop-based but with heavy R&B and jazz inspirations, offering a comfortable cushion for Alexa’s lush and dreamy vocals. With such an interesting pull of inspirations and harmony, “Broken Record” sounds both mature and youthful in an entirely timeless way.

When asked about the track, Alexa said, “I wrote it on a road trip to Philly in the summer , pondering what my ideal romantic relationship would look like. I was inspired by a 70’s soul song I had on my playlist called ‘Would You Rather’ by The Georgettes.” This energy certainly comes across lyrically as “Broken Record” thrives in its ability to feel like a soft caress or dance around the living room with a partner. The track immediately drops you into imagining an idyllic relationship, and Given’s sweet vocals carry you along on the ride of love.
