Review: boy, cry by Eva Snyder

Article by: Ariel Morer

Acoustic country-pop artist Eva Snyder displays a warm, confident vulnerability in her new song “boy, cry.” Initially from Western Massachusetts, Snyder taught herself guitar and moved to San Francisco prior to settling down in her current home of Nashville.

A genuinely lovely, conversational goodbye piece, “boy, cry” was a pleasure to listen to. This track doesn’t need much to stand out- Snyder’s songwriting skills are utilized expertly in the interesting verses and memorable hook, and her clean, clear, emotive tone was the perfect vehicle for her breakup story.

Eva Snyder’s sweet spot is her gorgeous head register. She shows that you don’t need to channel the vocal acrobatics of Adele to be a masterful vocalist, or flowery symbolism to be a compelling writer. “boy, cry” feels moderately reminiscent of Colbie Caillat’s and Taylor Swift’s older works, pleasantly upgraded for the 2020s. Snyder notes songwriting maven Julia Michaels as an influence and I can certainly hear impressive similarities, both vocally and compositionally. The sparse acoustic instrumentation was a welcome, delicate bedding for the poised nuance in her voice, and I loved that this lent itself even more to the vulnerability of her lyrics.

I’m excited to see what the future holds for this multi-talented artist!
