Live Show Review: Andy Grammer

Review by Isabelle Turner

Joy looks different on everyone, but to Andy Grammer, it finds its form in live performances. Grammer is sharing his joy with fans through his The Art of Joy Tour, creating a heartfelt community through his live shows. This community was in abundance at his June 21st show at the Charleston Music Hall.

Andy Grammer’s appeal lies largely in his inspiring lyrics and joyous melodies. True to his brand, Grammer began his show with a speech about finding himself, and finding joy in the process before opening with “Damn It Feels Good to Be Me”. Being visibly shocked at the amount of people dancing and singing to his songs, Grammer ensured that every fan felt welcomed and appreciated. His energy dancing across the stage was infectious, and his audience immediately reciprocated his energy. It’s rare to see a performer having more fun than the dancing fans below them, but Andy Grammer accomplished it.

Grammer’s setlist consisted of both new songs, such as his recent release “Good Man (First Love)” and classic hits, such as “Honey, I’m Good” and “Keep Your Head Up”. Grammer ended the show on a heartfelt note with “Don’t Give Up On Me” that left many fans in tears. With a range of songs that seem to be fan-favorites, Grammer beautifully incorporated a variety of his music that seemed to resonate with every single person in the audience.

There was a pause that truly showed how purposeful Grammer is in ensuring his audience to be present and find joy in the music. He asked his audience towards the end of his set “Have You Felt Joy Here Tonight?”. While a small moment, the pause for reflection shows Grammer’s emphasis on joy and finding it within music and live shows.

The best way to describe an Andy Grammer concert is one of joy. He has this innate power to transcend heartbreak and hardships into moments of joy. While this is apparent in his music, it becomes even more obvious through his concerts. If you have the chance to go see Andy Grammer live, I can’t recommend it more.
