New to Me by Chris Reid

This upbeat love song reminded me of something that would fit well in a Curious George movie — very similar to music by Jack Johnson. The message is all about diving into love, headfirst, fearlessly, no matter what happens. It’s really refreshing, with an added horn section that works surprisingly well in the song. Light percussive elements punctuate the verses while the choruses come in with a gusto. If you’ve been looking for a new feel-good tune for a wedding, or even just a casual Tuesday spent with a loved one, this song is just the thing.

Dreams by Jade Bird

This song caught my attention when it played on XM radio - first, the light guitar strumming with the string section, then the raspy vocals with so much angst in them the young starlet almost sings off-key. But her strong lyricism and bright dynamics really shine so bright “is this what dreams are made of / being so in love you can only break their heart”. In the intersection between ABBA and Fleetwood Mac, this song carries an incredible tune of its own. It’s equal parts coming-of-age and full maturity north of forty years old when you truly don’t care what anyone thinks anymore. I’ve had this on repeat basically all week and highly recommend you do the same for an instant mood boost that will inspire you to chase your craziest ideas without hesitation.

No Looking Back by Stella

I really liked the way this song really inspires listeners to focus on what’s in front of them instead of their past regrets. While most songs are about some kind of romantic relationship, this song is all about falling in love with your life. Electric guitars punctuate the message with a good beat up against the drums. When you’re on a summer roadtrip thinking about the future, this song is the perfect soundtrack to listen to while planning your next adventure.

Toxic by Nicole Obarzanek

Paired up with a fun concept video that’s straight out of the 2000s coming-of-age films, this dance-pop song hits all the right notes. It’s a lot like something Dua Lipa might sing, and brings in all the sass with every word. The message is all about being your authentic self, and it calls out anyone who tries to fit in with the crowd at the cost of losing what makes them special. Listen to this for a nostalgic trip down memory road with an updated 2020s twist.

Ghost by Ben Gage

Rounding out this week’s picks is an indie-folk tune that has a really inspiring message. First, it sets the scene for an emotional moment with light guitar chords blended with some bright strings. Then as his raspy vocals set the pace, the listener is treated to some reflections on the struggle it is to leave your mark on the world and stand out from the crowd — “I’m a ghost in this town / they’ve gotten used to not having me around”. For anyone who enjoys music by Noah Kahan or Sam Fender, this song is perfect to help you think about your life and not feel so alone as you carve out your place in this world.
