Angelina’s Corner: Roundup

Meka

CAVE by Simón

This gorgeous alt-pop ballad will tug at your heartstrings as you reflect on a lost love that you wish you handled differently. Whether you’re having trouble moving on or wishing you cut ties sooner, this song will remind you that you’re not alone in feeling that way. “Don’t you come back / I should have left you in the dark” plays beautifully into the cave metaphor of comparing the intimacy of a relationship to a secluded rock formation. Sonically, this track tiptoes into more R&B territory, but it’s got enough rock elements to make it enjoyable for most music fans.

What Once Was by meka

This folk tune has a delectable, calming quality intermingled between surprising chord progressions that will take you on a journey. It’s haunting, reflective, and features gorgeous harmonies that will transport you to the nearest wildflower meadow in your favorite fairytale. While I don’t typically gravitate towards folk music, this one has a magical quality to it that will catch your attention the same way it did for me. If you’ve been thinking about the passage of time and the bittersweetness of past memories, this song is perfect for you.

Catching Your Eye by The Thing With Feathers

I really liked the way this alt-rock band’s tune is littered with angst and sultry lead guitars to create an ambient space. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to let go and have fun, consider this your sign. The lyrics are all about getting the attention of someone you’ve been thinking about for a while, and the thrill when they like you too. It’s a satisfying confidence boost, ideal for a night on the town or to get your steps in on the treadmill. Enjoy this with your beverage of choice and live life to the fullest with every energizing note.

Flowers in your hair by Westwell

This song is straight out of a Coldplay deepcut, with all the instrumental and emotional tension you’d expect. If you’ve been looking for a way to let out some steam and reflect on the tougher moments in life, this song is just the ticket. It’s poetic, thought-provoking, and a beautiful medium to help you grow in your resilience and appreciate life’s journey, no matter where it takes you. I also really liked the sonic dynamics in this one that help the listener focus on the present moment.

Where Would I Be by Presence Music Band

I really loved the bigger message of this song being centered on having faith in Jesus, and the way biblical stories and lessons are woven throughout the lyrics (“It ain’t lost on me / how You set me free”). Sonically, the style is very pop-oriented with lots of bright vocals and bigger messages that will help you reflect and think about the deeper meaning of life. Bonus points for the tasteful trumpet in the chorus that adds a nice sonic texture without being cheesy.
