Angelina’s Corner: Roundup
Words by Angelina Singer
Little Blue House by Moody Joody
Swampy lead guitar opens this quirky track that’s an even nosier-version of Taylor Swift’s “I Look in People’s Windows”. Light vocal harmonies bounce off the fuzzed-out guitars that sound almost like a nursery-rhyme in the chorus. The lyrics are all about surface-level observations that also contribute to that childlike curiosity that most people usually grow out of. It was refreshing to hear a new song that wasn’t centered on romance for a change, but rather just the romanticization of life and the people around us living their own unique lives.

Quintessential punk-rock with a touch of that emo charm is back in full-force with this one, all about being authentic when you’re tempted to fit in with the crowd. I loved the way this one opens up in the pre-chorus, building toward the chorus, written all about self-destructive tendencies that can also hold you back. I had never heard of Dolly Ave before this song crossed my desk, but there’s so much to like about it. Bonus points for the on-brand palm-muted guitar and the sonic dynamics that make listeners feel like they’re reading a super catchy musical diary entry.
This one sounds like a Journey B-side in the best way — it’s bright, psychedelic, and filled with echoing vocals that transport you right back to the ‘80s. “When the weight of the world is heavy on your heart / I’ll be there as I was it was me from the start” are just some of the beautiful lyrics that depict this message full of passionate love and devotion. Keyboard notes fill the space in between the verses, and I loved that lead guitar solo — it scratched my brain in just the right way. It’s super danceable and might make you want to break out your hairspray and neon clothes.
I immediately thought of Paramore when I heard this song — those driving guitars show so much of that style and it’s a lot of fun. The message is awesome, all about staying alive when life makes you want to be anything but. I thought the production style was awesome, and while the vocal notes had some moments of imperfection, I really wanted to showcase this artist anyway because this is my favorite genre of music ever. If you’ve been looking for a reason to stay the course and never give up, this song will help you find your purpose again. Great guitar solo too!
This fun song gives so much life to the alt-rock genre, with a nice ‘90s flair that you’ll recognize when you listen to it. I loved the lead guitar work and the way the music feels like it’s just begging to accommodate you on your next roadtrip down an open road. The vocals have so much grit in them, the band reminded me a bit of the glam fashion-rock band Palaye Royale. Listen to this one anytime you need a little extra pep in your step for a great day and even better night on the town.
2000’s alternative meets a slightly-emo edge in this song that’s written all about crawling back to someone you promised you’d never want to see again. The guitars are gritty, and the vocals reminded me a lot of Avril Lavigne, which is definitely a win for me, as she’s one of my all-time favorites. Sonic dynamics glow and shift with each passing note, creating an ambience that you’ll feel from your head to your toes. If you’ve been looking for a reason to throw caution to the wind in your dating life, this song might be the cautionary tale you’ve been searching for (with an added fantastic beat).
I Write It Down Anyway by the Rivyr
This folk-track has a beautiful arpeggiated gutiar leading the way, as the raspy vocals lead hte listener through an emotional storyline of falling in love by accident. It’s very stream-of-consciousness, a genuine look at the human condition and the way matters of the heart are rarely straightforward and easy. It’s ideal for country fans that like music with a lot of heart, or anyone who tracks the passage of time with urgency and a lust for life. Listen to this song to remind you of what’s really important in life, and cherish the connections you have with the people in your life that are most important.
