Weekly Roundup

Sunburn — Cole Bauer

With a fast-paced melody and guitar heavy instrumental in tow, this new release from indie singer-songwriter Cole Bauer makes a restless mind sound sweet. Reaching out with a desperate ache for satisfaction he just can’t grasp, Bauer compares his desire for a particular person to “praying everyday for sunburn,” at the end of summer. The sun is setting fast on the season just as it seems to be on their love, and he embodies the rushed chaos in his heart through endearingly rambly lyrics, noodly guitars and the sunniest of vibes.

supercinematic — Sara Jackson Holman

Singer-songwriter Sara Jackson-Holman is back with a delightfully eerie tune just in time for the commencement of spooky season. Sultry vocals deliver an ode to a less than conventional love affair, voicing her appreciation for and addiction towards her “ride or die.” Echoey synths and percussion make up the lone accompaniment to the haunting vocal, resulting in a spellbinding three minutes you’ll find yourself happily lost within.

Behind Closed Doors — Rebecca McCartney

With a voice full of soul and lyrics that strike you right where it hurts, Rebecca McCartney utilizes her newest single to call out her partner’s less-than-flattering approach to their relationship. It’s hard to find security in something that only exists where other eyes can’t see — a message McCartney articulates with a palpable sadness behind each note of confrontation. It’s a somber vow to continue being “cut down” by this love, a wounded perspective from someone who so blindingly deserves to receive that which they extend.

Solution — Slim & The Beast

Psychedelic and fresh, this new release is as addictive as it is synth-and-bass-heavy (that’s VERY addictive). Falsetto vocals dance above dreamy guitars throughout the chorus, playing out an atmospheric melody with the crispness of something succinct. Its reliance on old-school Bee Gees-esque harmonies turns the theme of lostness on its head, and you’ll find you lose yourself in one listen just to catch back up with a much more authentic you around spin two.

My Winner — Past Life

A cheerful ode to being there for your friends, this sonic arm around your shoulders is bound and determined to light you up inside. Phoenix-esque melodies sweep you up with the endearing lyrics, emotive and motivational in one go. Add a healthy dose of badass, winding guitars and synth-y daydream material, and you’ve got one hell of a groovy listen.

Prom Dress — Bren

This debut single from up and coming indie powerhouse Bren embodies all of your dreamiest coming-of-age film fantasies. Penned for a beautiful, spontaneous companionship that faced a looming expiration date in the form of one half leaving for college, it romanticizes the tragedy of such wild adoration cut short whilst embracing the fact that the memories made are just as worthy of cherishment as any lifelong love. The track blends nineties nostalgia with modern day wistfulness oh so well, marking a first taste of this artist I cannot wait to hear more of.
