Angelina’s Corner: Roundup

Words by Angelina Singer

Bridesmaid by Lauren Spencer Smith

This heartfelt song is written all about a friendship that has sadly degraded. The speaker of the song presents the storyline with passion, and the strong vocals really drive home the point that sometimes the ending of a friendship is more painful than a romantic breakup. A light string section sets the scene as the artist talks about daydreaming about her wedding, but there’s still a thread of sadness floating beneath the surface. “You were the first one that I’d choose / you were the last one that I’d want to lose” is a great line depicting the unique pain of this loss. If you’ve ever lost a friend who’s still alive but no longer in your life, this song will be the perfect soundtrack to your healing.

Daze by Jason Mays

This electropop song has an ethereal quality to it, with an upbeat message and intriguing sonic dynamics. I love the way it compares a trip to outer space to falling in love - it’s really poetic and packs a punch. Bonus points for the lead guitar mimicking the vocals and the danceable beat that will get stuck in your head. Whether you’ve been in love, or you hope to be someday, this song is just the thing to get you moving and feeling your best.

Don’t Hold Me Back by Attic Birds

This song feels like it’s straight out of the 80s in the best way. Ambient guitar floats around the smooth vocals, creating a dreamlike environment that you can’t help but sink into. I really liked the sonic dynamics of the verses compared to the choruses, and all the rich textures of the studio mix. The lyrics really promote a poetic mindset, romanticizing even the little things in life. If you’ve been looking to reset your mindset, this band is just the thing. Listen loud on repeat for best results.

What I’m After (Pray for Me) by Half Light Music

This introspective song depicts the story of someone dealing with regret and finding comfort in their faith. It’s all about a fresh start and being brave enough to take a detour when life throws some unexpected setbacks.I really like the way the music grows alongside the storyline, and the lead guitar that really drives the beat and the urgency behind it. This song is super theatrical and will grab your attention in both its smart lyricism and sonic ideas. Enjoy it with the windows down, while driving somewhere exciting on a warm summer evening.

All This Anger by Sophie DeLeo

This song is all about diffusing conflict without making anything worse. For a song about anger, it’s pretty relaxed, and a great way to reflect on your emotions instead of letting them control you. I really liked the vocal harmonies between the two vocalists and the way the lyrics inspire the listener to work on their own self-control and better themselves. This song is great if you’ve been feeling misunderstood and need a way to process your emotions productively.
