Interview: The Happy Fits

Interview by Kelly Carrazzone

With the dazzling charm of a well-oiled indie pop band, The Happy Fits are without a doubt going to be your new favorite band. This Jersey-bred trio (consisting of Calvin, Luke, and Ross) have been creating musical magic together since 2016 and show no signs of slowing down. While COVID-19 put many artists through the ringer, The Happy Fits banded together and are bursting into 2022 stronger than ever before. These guys make music that feels confident and new, like diving headfirst into a new life chapter and hitting every green light along the way. I was ridiculously excited to chat with The Happy Fits band before their Nashville tour stop to talk about their intriguing band history, their current tour with The Maine and Charlotte Sands, and all the new music they have been working on the last few months!

It’s pretty rare to find a band that is actually great at every aspect of being a band. No really, The Happy Fits have seemingly perfected the art of creating music that connects deeply with their fans, crafting a supportive, uplifting live show community, and having a genuinely awesome time doing what they love. What started as a casual summer project for Calvin, Ross, and Luke quickly became the indie pop trio we know and love today. Their approach has always been just that— create music that is fun and freeing, with a drive like no other.

Oh we were stupidly confident back when this band first started. But it was great because we didn’t feel any pressure to fail. We had a lot of support, we were having a lot of fun, and we really had a blast creating those first few music projects. It all felt right, so we just kept going at it… and now here we are!
— Ross of The Happy Fits for Tongue Tied Mag

After releasing their first EP back in August 2016, The Happy Fits started to make a name for themselves as a band that brings a refreshing, lighthearted perspective to the unavoidable chaos of growing up. Fans turned to the band for a good time and a live show that perfectly emulated the heart and soul of The Happy Fits community. All these years later, it is clear that the band truly prioritizes giving listeners their best performance time and time again. I was lucky enough to catch the band’s set on The Maine’s XOXO Tour this past week in Nashville, and boy oh boy do these guys put on a show.

There is a complete energy shift when The Happy Fits hit the stage. The room swells with anticipation, fans surge forward in The Cannery Ballroom to inch closer to their favorite indie pop trio as the band members leap out one by one. As soon as Luke perches behind that drum kit and Ross takes hold of his guitar, Calvin explodes onto the stage, cello in hand, as the band prepares to give their all to the crowd before them.

This high energy group never seems to stop. In fact, The Happy Fits were just one day into their support tour with The Frights in 2020 when COVID knocked the music industry off its feet. Did that stop our favorite band from connecting with fans across the globe? Of course not! The Happy Fits took that period of forced isolation and absolutely ran with it. Full of live streams, songwriting, and exponential community growth, The Happy Fits proved that nothing would stop them from achieving every goal they’ve ever set— and this upcoming year is surely going to prove that point even further.

Last month, The Happy Fits released their latest single “Changes”, an invigorating, future-minded track that describes the imperfections of stumbling through adulthood one day at a time. “Changes” is an upbeat, glowing song that pushes this band even further along their path to total indie pop world domination. Of course, the band members went the extra mile to release an bubbly, playful video alongside the single release. Check it out below:

Luckily for Happy Fits fans, 2022 is about to bring us a lot more music from the band! The summer and fall will have plenty more singles from the guys, as we inch closer and closer to a third full record from the group. If you haven’t gotten a chance to see The Happy Fits perform live yet, I cannot stress enough how much a performance by this band will improve your quality of life. Okay, that’s a bit dramatic. But not very far from the truth. You can catch The Happy Fits on the XOXO Tour alongside The Maine and Charlotte Sands by buying tickets HERE or catch them at their biggest headlining show yet at The Troubadour in Los Angeles on April 18th.

We are so stoked to watch The Happy Fits continue their exponential growth this year and cannot thank them enough for taking the time to spill all the incredible details before their show last week.

Be sure to stream the band’s new song “Changes” on Spotify and Apple Music. You can follow The Happy Fits on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook for all the latest music release and live show updates.
