Interview: Eraste

Unlike most debut projects, Dallas based singer-songwriter Eraste takes listeners on a wild ride from beginning to end with her new EP “crashing every party.” With her goal being to explore different types of genres and define her artistic style, the EP takes listeners on a ride from beginning to end. The themes and ideas of loneliness, fear, guilt, love, and more come together as a whole while each track remains individual in style. Described as a whiplash of emotions, ‘crashing every party’ features five songs that help Eraste define her sound while embarking on her journey of self discovery.

Her debut project was originally written over a year ago at the beginning of quarantine, and was evolved and perfected throughout the course of a year. Eraste shares that at times she felt a little burnt out from the constant repetition of the same tracks, but hearing fans input and reactions to new releases is what made it worth it.

“They get to hear it with fresh ears and get to hear the final version of a song whereas to me I hear the same version four or five different times. Like ‘forbidden love’ could’ve been a million different things but we ended up on that one. And people hearing it, they can’t hear anything else. That makes me feel better because I don’t know, I just want people to like it.”

The creative process behind the whiplash of the EP comes from a variety of sources. The original lyrics and melodies often stem from being alone in the car and writing. After this, she enjoys bouncing ideas off of other people in order to make the best tracks possible. A creative person at heart, Eraste has many things to come in terms of new music in 2021. As of today, April 2nd her new music video premiers for the hit track ‘right back where you want me.’ See the full music video below.

After growing up in a household that wasn’t exactly musical, Eraste discovered her talents early on leading worship in churches in her home state of Texas. It was there that she discovered her love for acoustic music, but at the same time discovered her love for pop music. This was something she didn’t openly talk about during her high school years as her school was not musical and didn’t even have a choir. After attending college briefly, she ultimately made the decision to pursue music wholeheartedly. To her, “I can’t do something if I don’t feel like I’m thriving.” With this, she left school in order to pursue her passions.

“I knew that I wanted to be a musician but I didn’t know how that was going to exactly work.”

Serving as her debut single, ‘Break My Own Heart’ was another track written in her car, this time to the rhythmic clicking of the car blinkers. Turning environments into inspiration, Eraste was able to capture vivid emotions throughout her pivotal lyrics and stunning vocals. The track quickly racked up over six thousand streams and redefined pop music in a way that is both relatable, and unique to Eraste as an artist.

From there on Eraste knew she wanted to be a pop artist. She wanted to “do a bunch of different shit and see what I can do, and see what I can be.” Pulling influences from debut Taylor Swift and 2014 Tumblr culture, Eraste has a niche style that pairs perfectly with her unique voice. Her emotions are felt throughout the entirety of the EP and her love for music is what creates the cohesivity of the EP that is filled with an array of styles and sounds.
