Interview: Brynn Elliott
Few people in this world are as motivated and accomplished as Harvard graduate, country-pop musician, and resident girl boss Brynn Elliott. At fourteen she decided she’d one day become a first-generation college student. Not only did she succeed in these goals, but she went on to apply to Harvard University. Including her music with her application, she impressed one of the top schools in the country; while simultaneously capturing the hearts of America with her words, melodies, and voice.
The Atlantic Records signed singer-songwriter is inspired by the thought of embracing oneself fully and completely. Her music reflects this concept; each track exudes an amount of confidence seemingly unmatched in the pop music world. She shared with us that it was never her intention to do so, it just happened. “Philosophy and music are two sides of the same coin for me. Pop music looks for what is universal in the world, providing that place for people to come and relate about the things we all feel, which is what philosophy does as well. My passion for those ideas isn’t going to go away after college - they might just look and sound different.”
Her most popular of her recent tracks, “Tell Me I’m Pretty,” has already seen over five million streams on Spotify alone, empowering women and people of all ages to embrace their best and most authentic selves. Followed by a flurry of remixes, versions, and singles “Letter To A Girl,” and “Without You,” Brynn then released EP “Can I Be Real?.”
However, her origin with music stems all the way back to childhood, growing up in a childhood home featuring a pawn shop guitar purchased by her father. “He played it sometimes,” she shares, “I remember one day during high school, I was feeling really stressed and overwhelmed. And I was just like hey, can I play your guitar? That just became my evening routine…That turned into me writing acoustic guitar songs and recording a bunch of those songs.”
It’s no doubt that an integral theme in her music consists of messages promoting self confidence, empowerment, and embrasure of oneself. “There's so many things that we have to encounter and face whether that's living up to a certain standard of beauty in life or on the internet or just so many different things that come with being a woman,” She says, “I just hope that my fans are encouraged [by my music.]”
