Hana Eid Interview

Interview by Kelly Carrazone

With the resurgence of numerous rock-leaning music acts popping up in the last 2 years, nothing excites me more than a fresh, youthful take on the Nashville indie rock scene. Hana Eid is setting her sights on 2023 with hungry eyes and an unmatched eagerness to make sure her voice is heard. While it can be so easy for young artists to fall into an endless loop of “following the pack”, singer/songwriter Hana Eid is leaning into life’s disappointments and downfalls with an unapologetic bluntness that turns heads. Her latest indie rock track “Shrapnel” walks the line of angst and anger, plucking out pieces of shrapnel left behind by a lost love. I got to sit down with this Nashville newcomer via Zoom to chat all things “Shrapnel” and her incredible success as a young, indie rock force in the music scene.

Hana Eid has always been drawn to the beauty of crafting songs that bring people together and make them feel a little less alone. From the first moment she picked up a guitar at 8 years old, Eid has gone full steam ahead building a confident, punchy sound that carries her to the forefront of modern indie rock. Following in the footsteps of wordy rockers like Briston Maroney, Soccer Mommy, and Pinegrove, Hana Eid is carving out a league of her own one smash single at a time.

At only 20 years old, Eid is laying the groundwork of her artistry with heartfelt lyrics, angsty tones, and a wicked sense of humor to match. She spent the majority of 2022 releasing her first batch of singles, including fan-favorites like “Dancing To The Smiths”, “Let Down”, and “Moonroof”. These songs landed her incredible Spotify Editorials such as New Music Friday, undercurrents, and even Fresh Finds Rock: Best of 2022. Following a lineup of over 30 live shows in the past year, Eid says she is eager to dive headfirst into 2023 with her new music.

“I’ve been writing songs since I was 9 years old, but I started writing more seriously at 13/14 years old. I started out with pretty acoustic styles but now I’m making that transition into the rock world, which is very exciting!” -Hana Eid for Tongue Tied Mag

Today, Eid delights fans with the release of her latest single “Shrapnel”. This ode to disappointment is sewn together with the frustrations of picking up the pieces of a past whirlwind lover. Eid even says this is the closest thing she’s ever written to a diss track. The angst that carries this song from start to finish is inescapable and all-consuming. Listeners follow Eid into the depths of eye-rolling disappointments and come out on the other side better than they were before.

When I asked Hana how her new song came to be, she shared that these lyrics came to her quite suddenly around this time last year. Huddled up in the corner of her old dorm room, Eid crafted the song’s bones in a very natural, fluid fashion. After leaning on friends and fellow songwriters for feedback on the foundation of what would be “Shrapnel”, the following months were spent making the song what it is today– and now it’s the world’s tune to enjoy!

“I was sitting in my old dorm room and the song just kind of happened. I didn’t have anything particular in mind but it came to me pretty quickly. I didn’t know how I felt about the song at first, but after showing a few friends, I realized there was something really cool here that I wanted to flesh out and put out into the world” -Hana Eid for Tongue Tied Mag

When it rains, it pours. And yet, Eid has mastered the art of capturing not-so-happy feelings and meshing them with stunning songwriting. While it can be tempting to stick to the ordinary and “what works” (especially in a music bubble like Nashville) there is something so exciting about a young artist who is willing to take risks with her music and watch them pay off.

Hana Eid hails an unmatched uniqueness in sincerity, both in her lyrics and in her spoken words. Listeners can’t help but be drawn in by this indie rocker’s uncanny ability to find beauty in hopelessness. Eid says her goal is to leave this world better than she found it, and we are certain this Nashville newcomer is creating music that does just that.

In 2023, Eid is bringing her listeners a whole new wave of indie rock goodness. With numerous live performances and music releases already in the books, this young starlet is ready to hit the ground running with her latest single “Shrapnel”.
